Abandoned but Not Alone

I find Oliphant's argument reasonable because no child should be left behind. Every child is unique and will grow up the way they want to with the guidance of parents. Just because your child is gay, lesbian, transgender ect, does not mean they should be shunned from your life or left behind. If you look at great musicians and artists, a lot of them were gay and they flourished in life. The child should not be in harm because the parents do not want a son or daughter to like the same gender. The child is still a child and should not be treated differently than a straight child.

Saved Malcolm X

"Curiosity killed the cat" is an old saying. Curiosity leads us to learning new things in the world. I was always interested in the human body. I would watch the discovery health network to find out more and more about the body. Curiosity took me to another level of learning. I was always hungry for more knowledge and would not stop until I knew all the details. I sat endlessly watching birthing shows, extreme people, and miracles. I found a whole realm of different things I did not know existed. I would study the human body a lot in books. Curiosity helps open the mind to find out new things.

Making Connection Question 2

Everyone has different stories and where they came from. People's honesty is a key trait to solving problems. In everyday life people will make up lies to satisfy others, but in reality we need to be honest. There was a time when I was younger where I flooded my basement. I decided to stuff the blueberries down the drain and this caused the basement to flood. I immediately blamed my brother because we shared the blueberries. I watched my brother get yelled at and put in time out. I thought I would get away with this one. As I sat thinking in my room and playing with my polly pockets, I had an epiphany. I should not have lied to get out of something I ultimately had done. I marched down the stairs and told my grandmother the truth. The punishment was worse for me because I lied. From then on, I learned it is not okay to lie whether it is big or small.

Makinf Connections Number 1

Mixed messages are always given. A good example in education is when a child finally reaches college. Everyone says to have so much fun and get involved. Although on the other hand, many people want you to stay in and constantly study and do homework. The mixed messages of college life is hard to figure out. Parents want their children to have fun but at the same time get fantastic grades and study all the time. As a student, I try to balance all the extra curricular and school. I want to go out and have fun at games to support Plattsburgh, but something always keeps me in the dorm or library studying. I feel this is the mixed messages I received as a college student. I want to have fun, yet get an education.

Earning and Learning: Are Students Working Too Much?

Students are certainly overscheduled and Kramer's concern is a reality. I worked two jobs to save for college and help my mother pay for things since she is a single mom. Throughout highschool I had extra curricular activities, two jobs, taking care of my two nieces and my own schoolwork. My schedule was definitely packed and there is no doubt. In college, I had to leave my jobs and do strictly summer. I see myself with so much free time because back home there is never a dull moment. When it comes to students now in college, a lot of off campus students have a full time job and go to school full time. That scenario is hard to work with tremendously. Although many students need to work to help pay off college and they see it as a necessity. Therefore students schedules are over packed due to high expenses of college.

Universities Seeing a Gender Gap in Enrollments

Women are beginning to go into the work force in the generation more than others. The stay at home mom is slowly being diminished by women going to college. Men are starting to go into the home life and equal roles are starting to play out as time goes on. You also have the strong feminists who are fighting for a more meaningful role in society. They are wanting more power and right of choices. This therefore makes women push harder to get into college and graduate. College degrees normally get better pay than many jobs with only a high school education. Men can obtain jobs in construction, police, firefighting, EMS without going to college and taking small classes in order to be certified. Trade Schools are becoming more popular that give those programs to be taught. In the end, women are wanting a bigger role in society and pushing to do so. College is the gateway for the women to get better jobs and not be a stay at home mom. Also in society, a stay at home mom in the family is not affordable. Unless the male is making enough money to support the whole family, a stay at home mom is not possible.

We're Lying: Safe Sex and White Lies in the Time of AIDS

Sex education is an important class that should be taught in schools. You see teenagers getting pregnant younger and younger. I think there should be several classes that students should take. I informational safe sex class in middle school. This class will talk about sex and safe sex. The class should not really get into diseases because most children, unless born with it, will have it. The diseases should be mentioned but in high school they should be elaborated on. In high school, there should be talk about different methods of birth control and more depth about STD's. Teenagers should be aware about their body and what happens when they are careless when they engage in sexual affairs. I personally found out about sex and information in the fifth grade when we watched the puberty video. This is when I started to become aware of my body and what my body can do, produce a child. Fifth grade was a perfect time to make me aware of the changes in my body, but did not talk about sex. I had a sex education class in middle school and we talked about sex and different contraceptives. High school was where I learned the most about STD's, more contraceptives, and facts about sexual education. My journey on finding out about sex was awkward, but in the long run it has saved me from making worse decisions. Teenagers need to be exposed to know and not all parents will talk to them about it unless asked. Schools should have in depth conversations and have kids ask questions. Some may disagree and say it gives them more ideas to do. Although it does, we must try to trust the kids to make the right decision. Sexual education is great to start and should start as early as the sixth grade because that is when most boys and girls are going through the changes of life, puberty.

Drinnking Deaths Draw Attention to Old Campus Problems

Sink opens the article very strongly with the mentioning of a college students death. The first paragraph grabbed my attention and made me want to find out more. I know alcohol is a serious substance and can not be dealt with lightly. The underage drinking of a freshman and the death grabs the attention of the reader. The sentence also gives the overview of the article to know it is about the deaths caused by drinking. The opening is also relatable to many students and readers. Although we may not know someone who died from alcohol poisoning, we do know people who have way too much and black out. Sink made the opening perfect for the article and showed how serious the subject is. Her intentions were to pull you in and give you the overview.

Ch 2 Facebook Profile Throw a Wrench in the Future question 2

I myself have personal websites like Instagram and Facebook. To an extent, I do not put more than I should on social media. I do not give out my number, address or other personal things. I keep strictly people I know on my pages. Although everyone wants to meet new people and sometimes you have to use better judgement. People should not post their life stories on social media and put personal items. If you would look at my social media, people would know where I go to college, my hometown, my relationship status and some pictures but not many. There is a extent to what you should let people know and be conscience that outsiders can hack in. Like the article states about the employers looking at the profiles. It is not smart to post pictures of underage drinking and other illegal things on your page. It will cause you to look reckless. Although social media is a wonderful thing, you should monitor what you put on your page. It could save you in the future when others look at your profile.

Chapter 2 Focusing on Friends

The conclusion Tesich made did not surprise me. He argues relationships between men and women. The ending with women was critical for him as well with the relationship he held with men. He touched upon women in the beginning and transitioned to male friends. Ending with women did not surprise me because he did not expand on his idea. Although the ending sentence as he will not look close-up but look at the background. He is saying to not look at the things focused on one thing, but step back to look at the whole picture. The ending intrigued me and did not surprise me. He went through many friends and had many stories Although he looked at the friends closely and did not look from the outside in to the whole picture of friendship.
